Same director, same booklet

The new movie "The Box", directed by Richard Kelly, featured a weird booklet. Don't get me wrong, the content was pretty normal, I've seen that before. But the weird thing was where I saw the booklet before: in the movie Donnie Darko. you guessed it, both Donny Darko and The Box contain the same skeleton in a booklet, and both are movies directed by Richard Kelly.

Take a look at the version from "The Box":

Now here is the version from "Donnie Darko":

5 reasons to avoid OpenMoko FreeRunner

The 5 real reasons to avoid OpenMoko phone:

* OpenMoko software will block calls for free. Some developers are paid, but nobody is the sole authority over what should and shouldn't be fixed.
* OpenMoko endorses and supports none of the used technologies. Essentially nothing works.
* OpenMoko won't expose your whereabouts or provide ways for others to track you. It has no social features what so ever.
* OpenMoko doesn't play patent- and DRM-free formats like Ogg Vorbis and Theora.
* OpenMoko is not the only option. There are better alternatives that respect your time, play free media formats, and let you use software -- like the IPhone 3G.

Further more, even if you can still buy the hardware, all company backed distributions have stalled in their development. Even though the list of distributions is growing, the list of problems (phone locking up, calls failing, messages disappearing) is not shrinking. The OpenMoko company has started yet another project that, what ever it will be, is probably going to fail because of the same problem: you can create, distribute and sell the hardware but it will do nothing without good software. With the FreeRunner they have shown that they don't have the expertise to pull that off. At the hart of this problem, is a proud community which aims to be open and free. This community will never be able to serve normal users because they think freedom and choice should always win over usability and stability.

Many thanks to the FSF for a template to rant about the OpenMoko FreeRunner.

PS In five years or so, I'll use my OpenMoko phone with as much joy as I now use my Linux Desktop and then I'll post a comment saying that all is well in OpenMoko land.

No batteries? Oh yes there are batteries

In China they where selling these cool LED based lights. They where small, light and had and you could just squeezing them would give them enough energy to light up your day. What I thought was a cool light, turned out to be pretty stupid and useless.

Public television's magic word for security

The dutch public television hosts some of their programs online at www.uitzendinggemist.nl and they do it using the (yes, how stupid can they be) windows media format.

Because I don't use or own any Microsoft systems, I have to make due with reverse engineered FOSS solutions. No problem there, because gstreamer has a plugin and playing back the media will work most of the time.

New domain

I'm going to move hosting again, so it was time for a new domain name! Sourcelocation.net isn't the best in the book and it's currently hosted by my current hosting company, which I'm moving away from. So I decided a new name would help out. And the new name is... logfish.net
I'll be moving this blog from main.sourcelocation.net to log.logfish.net as soon as possible and after that, start working on closing the current hosting and moving to the new one... but all that will probably take a month or three.

Exit whenever you want

I've launched a new page where you can Exit to some other page that people come from. It's a nice little thing I like to use when I want bored people to be able to exit from my pages. I also use it for dialogs where people can choose to exit if they want, works great!

If you want to try it out, simply hit:

Triggerblock: an empty block that triggers when viewed.

Yeah, my first www.drupal.org posting, a full module in a snippet. The code defines a module that exposes a block and a trigger. The trigger will be fired when the special trigger block is shown. The trigger block itself only contains HTML comments.

First post!

Yes... the first post is officially on the web. The whole site still looks like nothing, but I will get to that later. Probably.
